Carrying a guidon topped with a fake skull and barbed wire, Pvt. Mario Guillen, 18, of Dallas, Tx., leads his citizen soldier classmates as the first class of the Patriot Academy leaves the school's dedication ceremony on Wednesday at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center.The Patirot Academy is a pilot program with a mission to allow high school dropouts join the National Guard in their state, and earn their diploma at the academy in between their Basic and Advanced Individual training.
In addition to their high school classes, the students receive training to equip them in their roles as soldiers once they move on to the guard unit.
The students receive full-time military pay for their rank and benefits while attending the academy and live in dorms on-site.
The entrance requirements include having 10 or less credit hours remaining for graduation; ages 17-20; and they must have been out of school for at least six months.
There are currently 48 students in the academy, 18 of them are from Indiana. The National Guard Bureau predicts a maximum of 500 students in the program by 2011. (Staff photo by Ken Ritchie/The Madison Courier)

Steve Palmer, co-owner of Madison Vineyards said that the vineyard was inundated with at least 100 calls for their help wanted advertisement this year, more than in year's past.Along with Snell, about 20 other people were working to beat the forecasted rain.
