Daily Work
Above and below: The Army Corps of Engineers have installed bulkheads and drained the water from the 1,200-foot-long main lock chamber of the Markland Dam and Locks in order to do repairs to the lower leaf gate, which was damaged when one of the leaves came off of its hinge Sept. 28. One leaf was removed and placed on a nearby covered barge for inspections and repairs. The fallen leaf is still at the bottom of the lock chamber, and should be removed this week. While the leaves are tended to, welders are also making necessary repairs to the Sockets for the pintle balls, which act similar to a ball and socket for the gate leaves to swing on. David Cart, of Vintage Restorations, paints the pressed tin ceiling in the sanctuary of the Kent United Methodist Church on Monday. Cart's work, which included some repair work near the church bell tower in addition to painting, should be done in about two weeks. The building is undergoing several restoration and renovation projects at the moment, with the congregation meeting in the fellowship hall on Sunday mornings.
Cart does most of his work with churches and other non-profit organizations. He helped with a major restoration project at the Deputy UMC several years ago, worked on the Historic Madison Inc., restoration of the Costigan House and wil be moving on to work on another church outside of the county this winter.
The Kent UMC had its ceiling painted a flat white color years ago. Cart found traces of the original colors while scraping the tin and is restoring those colors in the current restoration. He said the depth and complexity of the ceiling tile design had been lost in its all-white coating. "Now the detail will be hard to miss," Cart said. (Staff photo by Ken Ritchie/The Madison Courier)
